Beginner classes are a fantastic way to get your hands in the soil and foliage! It can seem intimidating, at first, diving into an ancient art form, worrying you won't "make a good tree". No fear! Bonsai is fun and relaxing, and Daniel will take you step by step through the process of styling your first (or fifth) tree.
Classes start with a brief discussion on the history of bonsai, and an overview of the basic concepts of the art. Daniel will share his personal journey in the art, as well as inviting every student to talk about their own experience, or hopes of gaining experience, with horticulture. If possible, Daniel will take students into a bonsai garden to explore the trees, and ask students what appeals to them about a particular tree, or the garden as a whole.
We then look at our demo tree. Each class focuses on a specific variety of tree, and different trees lend themselves to different types or styles. Having everyone work on the same tree means the class can learn as a whole, and also learn from each other's questions. Students have a chance to look closely at Daniel's demo tree, and then they choose the prebonsai (unstyled material) to work on. You will find that a particular tree will reach out to you as "your" tree!
Depending on the tree and time of year, we next move to getting your tree into a bonsai pot! You'll learn how to find the front prepare your pot, remove extra soil, position the tree properly and then wire it in securely, tucking bonsai soil around the roots.
And now it's time for styling!
Daniel will guide you as you clean, trim, wire, and position trunk and branches. This is often where students find a mindful sense of calm descends as they focus on each step.
Don't worry, we're there to help if you've a question or need help! No one should worry they're going to "ruin" their tree. If you need help, or aren't sure what to do, Daniel will work with you one on one.
There's no chance of you being left to fend for yourself in a bonsai class! We're here to make sure you have a great experience!
You'll leave class with a new art to practice and a wonderful bonsai YOU created, to care for as it continues to develop. You're welcome to bring your tree back to Bring Your Own Tree (BYOT) classes for future refinement, trimming and maintenance.
So what are you wating for? Now is the time to get into bonsai!
