Daniel Deephouse

Daniel Deephouse is a lifelong bonsai practitioner and educator originally from Perth, Australia. He began studying bonsai at the age of eight under the guidance of his grandmother, Elizabeth Deephouse, establishing an early foundation in both the practice and philosophy of working with living trees.

He is currently the Assistant Curator of the bonsai collection at the Huntington Library & Botanical Gardens, where he oversees the living collection, exhibitions, and volunteer program. Daniel also volunteers his time managing the bonsai collection at the Donald C. Tillman Water Reclamation Plant Japanese Garden.

In addition to his curatorial and teaching work, Daniel is a practicing landscape professional working throughout Los Angeles. His landscape practice extends bonsai principles beyond the pot, applying them to trees and garden environments at scale.

Through Deephouse Land, Daniel leads private, group, and corporate workshops built around structured, hands-on work with living trees. His programs emphasize focused attention, collaboration, and shared responsibility, using bonsai and landscape-based practice as a way to engage deeply with care, process, and the natural world.

Sharing the Art of Bonsai

Daniel's approach is simple; stay in the moment and connect with your tree. Use the time to disconnect from the frenetic pace of life and tune into a mindful activity.

As a neurodivergent human, Daniel uses bonsai to quiet his mind and focus on the beauty of life.

Daniel's ability to meet each and every student where they are allows diverse learners to succeed and thrive in group settings, enhancing the team building experience for all involved.

Daniel is available to teach at private and corporate events, to individuals as well as groups. He appears regularly at events throughout the year.
